The Couch Mouse (He is in it ALL)

I created this blog about 4 months ago. I thought about creating it 2 years before that. Once it was up I thought, now I have to write something. What am I gonna write? So, I waited. Not knowing what for. Then, what I like to call “The Couch Mouse” happened…..

I say “happened” lightly because I am currently in full swing “Couch Mouse”. In the past couple of weeks there have been some signs of mice activity in the house. I called the pest control service. Roger (the pest guy) comes out and assures me the  mice have just run through the house and right back out. “You don’t have a problem. It’s just been cold. They’re looking for warmth”. He set up a few traps just in case. O.K. So, I cleaned out the closets and pantry and went on with my life. Out of site, out of mind. WELL, a few nights ago I am up getting my daughter some milk. As I pass the upstairs couch I hear a Rustling. Like, something’s snacking. We have NO pets. Everyone else in my house is asleep. All of them as quite as a little mouse, except for the mouse! I run and get a trap we had in the laundry room, I quickly push it under the couch and hall A back to my bed. The next morning I call the pest control guy (OBVIOUSLY!). Roger comes back out, looks all around and no mouse to be found. He set up sticky traps everywhere, turned over the couches and chairs and assured me there were no mice in my couches. He told me to call him if I needed anything and went on his way. I am on pins and needles the rest of the day because I know I heard a mouse in my couch. The next morning I went downstairs, turned on a cartoon for the littles, grabbed a cup of coffee and got ready to sit on the couch. Right before I was gonna sit down something (I like to call “something” The Holy Spirit) told me to move the couch cushion first. So, I did and A MOUSE! A MOUSE! scurried all in the couch. Gross. I literally run out of my slippers and into the kitchen. One of my daughters (Cohen) says “mommy, there’s a mouse? Can I see him?” No! No! Mommy has to figure out what to do. I am now standing on the coffee table about to straight up DIE. Just then my husband (Pryor) walks through the front door (Praise THE LORD!) and we devise our plan of attack. In the end, my husband kills the “Couch Mouse” (with the broom) and I begin to clean like a mad woman (not with said broom) because I am completely grossed out.

Now, I cant stop cleaning, I’ve bought every single d-Con trap Target has in stock and I haven’t sat on my couches in days. I am exhausted. This sucks. Mice suck. Then today I started to feel a stirring. The Holy Spirit asking, Who told you to move the couch cushion to reveal the mouse? Who does this mouse remind you of? It hides in the shadows. It creates anxiety and fear. It’s tiny and helpless yet humans find themselves cowering in fear of it. Satan! You dirty rotten scoundrel. Yes friends, I am comparing Satan to a mouse. Now first, Do I think Satan sent the mouse or the Lord sent the mouse to teach me a lesson? Absolutely NOT.  Life is life and life happens. The wonderful thing about a relationship with Jesus is when you invite him in, (into ALL of it) he uses it ALL. He speaks through it ALL. Even through a “Couch Mouse”.

Here’s what we know about Mice. They hide in dark places and come out in the darkest of hours. They are filled with toxins. They poop about 100 times an hour(gross). It takes maintenance and attention to get rid of them.  Just like a mouse Satan has no real power (Colossians 2:14-15). Just like a mouse he hides in the shadows. He is full of toxins and bacteria.  He drops hundreds of lies an hour hoping to make us feel unsafe, unworthy and unable. (2 Thessalonians 7:10) Just like mice, it takes maintenance to ward him off and preventative measures to keep him away (Ephesians 6:10-18). Here’s what we know about Jesus. Jesus is the Light of the world (John 8:12). He is full of goodness (Ephesians 3:19). Jesus is all powerful (Hebrew 1:3). Jesus is truth and He has good plans for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11)

Listen, Satan has been trapped by the blood of our savior Jesus Christ. All the tools we need to defend against him are found in our relationship with Christ. We have to invite him in. Invite him into it ALL. As silly as it seems to compare Satan to a mouse or to think that a mouse has anything to do with Satan’s plot against me. The truth is, Jesus cares about it! No matter your situation, addiction, infidelity, fear, depression, or ANYTHING keeping you from God’s Love. He cares and calls those things out of your life. Jesus cares about your “Couch Mouse”! How funny would a T-shirt that says that be?

In all seriousness, I hope this will be a source of encouragement and inspire a time of reflection. Where is Satan hiding in your life? What is the Lord trying to reveal to you? Have I given the Lord ALL of my life? Where do you need to set a trap so that you can catch it before it spreads to other areas of your life? If you have not asked Jesus into your heart, Please do. Don’t Wait any longer! He has so much to Show you, personally. In and through ALL of your life. I promise you will not regret it. You just Wait and See.

  1. Your analogy is spot on! I’m so glad you can put your heart into an every day event and and find Him. And best of all, write about it to tell others about our God. So fun, I love it! I love you too!

  2. I loved this post. You are so right that God uses it ALL. I am so thankful that God loves us so much that he teaches us daily. We just have to stop to listen (the hard part). I look forward to more posts!
